Silver official medal of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. This medal is one of nearly 28,000 silver medals of this size struck for the occasion.
The obverse of the medal depicts the ‘old head’ Queen Victoria, with the legend “VICTORIA ANNVM REGINI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN MDCCCXCVII”. This translates to “Queen Victoria successfully completed the sixtieth year of her reign, 20 June, 1897”.
The reverse depicts the ‘young head’ of the Queen, with the inscription “LONGITVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS ET IN SINISTRA GLORIA”. This translates to “Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.”
