This Lego Friends Dolphin Cruiser set was a popular example from the Lego Friends series which was developed in 2012 by Lego Group specifically to appeal to girls. The launch of Lego Friends came after a $40 million global marketing push and was 'the most significant strategic launch' in a decade according to a Lego Group spokesperson. Before the launch of this line Lego's main customers were 90% boys.
Lego Friends include mini-doll figures, a pink and purple colour scheme, and sets that depict suburban life in the fictional town of Heartlake City. Some of the first sets in the Lego Friends series included a vet clinic, cafe, beauty salon and a house. The main characters are Stephanie, Olivia, Emma, Mia and Andrea, but there are others too. Included in the Dolphin Cruiser set is Mia, Maya and Andrew.
Lego was first invented in 1932 in Denmark, the interlocking design of Lego blocks were revolutionary. The simple uniform shape and modular interlocking design reflected a Modernist aesthetic, as well as maintaining a strong educational purpose. Lego has become one of the most successful construction toys in the world, and a staple in the toy box of most New Zealand children.
