Prints, &c: The Property of William Roscoe, Esq. (1816), described this etching as 'Boor looking out of a window' (lot 949). This has subsequently been more politely amended to 'The Peasant at/in window', but the central figure in his slightly ludicrous tall hat is hardly a model of dignity, refinement or prosperity. Haarlem was at this time the heart of the 'peasant' genre, at which Bega excelled. The print is arguably more of a study of light and dark tonality than it is a portrait.
