faldstools

Variously, folding stools used by worshippers to sit or kneel, especially those used by the sovereign during coronation. For chairs used by bishops or other prelates in the chancel of a church, use "faldistories." For the French form of folding stool used at court or domestically after the 17th century, use "pliants."
