Kofun

Refers to the period and culture in Japan, evident from around 250 AD. It is characterized by a highly organized aristocratic society, advances in armor and iron weapon technology, prominence of horse-riding warriors, and distinctive large, earthen, keyhole-shaped tumuli or burial mounds that were surrounded by moats.
