Overview
Located 71 miles ESE of Munich, Germany, the site was long visited as a source of salt, the name meaning "salt fort." Ancient city of Neolithic, Celtic, Roman, and early Christian origins. A Benedictine abbey was founded in the 7th century and was the seat of an ecclesiastic principality from 1278-1803. Secularized and absorbed into Hapsburg Austria in 1816. Birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and home of the Salzburg Festival, an annual event featuring both music and drama started in 1920.
