Overview
Stredocesky is a rich agricultural region in the north-central Czech Republic. The northern part of the region consists of lowlands, drained by the Moldau and Elbe rivers, while the southern portion is highlands, the whole measuring some 4245 square miles. Agricultural products include apples, plums, pears, cherries, walnuts, oats, rye, potatoes, flax, grapes, hogs, cattle, and poultry. Vast forests support lumber and papermaking industries. Most heavy industry is found in the north, and includes sugar refining, oil refining, steel milling, and electronics, textile, and processed food manufacturing. Both wine and beer are produced. The regional capital and cultural center is the city of Prague, also the national capital. The region's 2003 estimated population was 1,129,300.
