Overview
A major highlight and strength of the fish collection is the ability to store medium to large specimens. These are stored in 190 tanks of 250-500 litres. This collection enables researchers to examine the adults of many species as well as juveniles, thereby gaining an understanding of the true variability of a species for accurate identification. In addition, there are three very large tanks (1700-2000 litres) which hold our largest specimens. These include a giant grouper (115 kg), a sleeper shark (300+ kg), a devil ray (150+ kg), and two giant undescribed skates from New Zealand's waters.
