Off-shore: persimmon brotula

Topic

Overview

Microbrotula punicea Anderson, 2007.

A bright persimmon-coloured brotula was collected by Andrew Stewart in 2004, at three sites of 8.5-15.5 m depth, deep in cracks and under boulders around Raoul Island. Although its maximum size is only 58 mm SL, this species is the largest known Microbrotula, and brings the number of species in the rare tropical genus to seven. It is the first recorded bythitid from shallow waters around the Kermadec Islands.
