Overview
Symphurus thermophilus Munroe & Hashimoto, 2008.
A tongue sole, described from only 16 specimens collected from a disjunct distribution between Kaikata Seamount (off south-eastern Japan) and Rumble 3 volcano (outer Bay of Plenty, New Zealand) at depths of 239-715 m. Collected in New Zealand waters by epibenthic sledge and dredge from the RV Tangaroa and by the submersible Pisces V suction sampler. This species is the only known pleuronectiform to exclusively inhabit hydrothermal vents.
