Overview
Fri. Oct. 13.
Father + I decided to go to the Feilding Cattle Fair - Dora drove us down to the 8.45 am train. Travelled up to Palmerston with Mr. Saint + Tom Powles + family. Three or four big cars met us at Palmerston to motor us to Feilding. Left via Rangitaiki Street + passed through lovely level country evidently surface of fan of Manawatu River. Kowhai trees all along the road a mass of yellow bloom. Crossed Oroua R[iver] + passed through Awahuri. Turned northward at this point + skirted the foot of the long low ridge of hills which runs north and south - one of the cuttings showed fine yellow gravels so this ridge is evidently of fluvialite [???] origin. About [blank] miles from Awahuri the road runs through a small but delightful piece of bush traversed by a winding stream. Several massive [page break] white pines overarch the road + smaller specimens together with totaras, manuka, titokis _ the georgous yellow kowhai go to form a charming little bit of the old forest. Reached Feilding + had dinner. Got a glimpse of the central planted "square", main streets + r[ai]l[wa]y station + then went to sale yards. Tremendous yarding of cattle of all ages + mostly well-bred. 3 year store bullocks £13 to £14. One pen of 4 fat cows £19.18.0. Yearling steers £6.10.0 - Father + I were much interested in this lot but price too high. Left at 4 pm by car + returned to Palmerston by former route. Caught 5 pm train to Levin. Clare + Maud met us at station.
