Overview
Mon. Oct. 23.
Labour Day. Maud + I decided to spend the day in Waikanae. Drove to Levin in gig + put Silvermane in Bradley's stables - walked to station + caught 8.51 am train. On arrival
[page break]
walked northwards along main road for half mile + crossed a well-set-up farm, evidently a horse farm, to the foot of the hills, a spur of which we ascended to the edge of the bush. Found a sheltered nook + enjoyed a fine view of the plain, sea + Kapiti Island. Took a panoramic photo [word underlined] (1) of the plain showing Waikanae village + river, the fan, sand-hills, sea + Kapiti. (2) One of Maud on hillside. After lunch we returned to Waikanae via main road of the horse farm + then walked down to the river. Turned off road at the bridges + followed the track alongside river to the whirlpool. Later we climbed the hill + took a photo [word underlined] (3) of Waikanae one (4) of some fine astilias + Pukas on a tree-top. Maud took one of me (5) beside the river at the whirlpool. Explored the bush + collected some small specimens of titoki, ake-ake etc. Returned to Levin by 6.25 pm train + drove home.
